Extension of New Immigration Policies

The following report is regarding the extension of the immigration policy that is currently in place in Costa Rica. This policy affects Residents, Special Categories and Estancia, both current ID holders, as well as applicants with a filling receipt.

Whats happening?

Due to the current COVID19 crisis, Costa Rica government authorities enabled a closing of the borders to all foreign nationals, with exception to those who have an ID card as Resident, Special Category or Estancia, as well as any expat who has an application and carries a filing receipt.

These measures are currently being extended to cover from March 24th and until May 15th 2020. The government introduced the latest change via a press conference that was held to regard the status of the pandemic in Costa Rica, and it reserves the right to further extend these measures.

The application of these measures is intended to limit the spread of the COVID19 virus, and it is only aimed at any foreign nationals who are currently located within Costa Rica, with a type of permit or ID Card, or those who have their permit or ID card process in progress. These measures do not apply to any expat who left the country before the time period stated above.

Any foreign national with a Residency, Special Category ID or a “Estancia”, or any of those currently who have a filing receipt, be warned, that if you try to leave the country during this time period, you will be given an entry impediment, meaning that you WILL NOT BE ALLOWED TO RE–ENTER the country at least until after May 15th at 12:59 p.m.

Any foreign national who attempts to enter the country via an unauthorized port of entry during the closing of the borders, will have their residency status cancelled, without exception.

If you are out of the country at the moment, and are not planning to return for the time being, this measure will NOT affect you or your residency process or ID card.

Please remember to carry your passport and current ID card or filing receipt to avoid any inconvenience.
